At least 10 people, including a child, were killed in an Israeli air strike that set fire to a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza City, according to local emergency services.
The Palestinian Civil Defence reported recovering the bodies early on Wednesday after flames engulfed parts of the Yafa School, which had been converted into a shelter for families uprooted by ongoing hostilities.
Footage circulating on social media showed tents in flames, with melted canvas covering burnt furniture and beds. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as fire consumed the temporary shelters.
The attack occurred amid heavy overnight shelling and air raids in multiple locations across the Strip.
Civil defence teams also appealed for urgent assistance to rescue people trapped under rubble in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood, where two residential buildings were hit.
Officials said rescue efforts were delayed due to the area being deemed a “no-go zone” by Israeli forces.
Further casualties were reported in northern Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp, where two people, including a child, died in an earlier strike. In the south, one person was killed and several wounded in a drone attack on shelters in the al-Mawasi area, previously designated as a “safe zone.”
Since resuming its offensive in March, Israel has imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza, citing ongoing efforts to retrieve hostages.
Over 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict since October 2023, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The Israeli government has yet to comment on the latest incidents.
