Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that tariff and trade wars undermine global economic order and hurt multilateral systems, during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Beijing, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.
Xi made the remarks on Wednesday while hosting Aliyev in the Chinese capital. The Chinese leader said trade disputes damage the legitimate interests of all nations and weaken international economic structures.
"China is ready to work with the Azerbaijan side to uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core... and safeguard international fairness and justice," Xi said, as reported by Xinhua.
During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new phase in China-Azerbaijan relations. The partnership includes commitments to deepen cooperation in law enforcement, security, and multilateral diplomacy.
As part of the agreement, the countries signed 20 cooperation documents under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The documents cover a wide range of sectors, including green development, digital economy, aerospace, legal collaboration, and intellectual property rights.
Xinhua noted that Azerbaijan was one of the earliest supporters of the BRI, a flagship initiative launched by Xi in 2013 to expand China’s global influence through infrastructure development and trade connectivity.
Azerbaijan, located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia and sharing borders with Iran, Russia, Georgia and Armenia, has strategic significance in the BRI’s transcontinental vision.
Xi emphasised that both countries are committed to strengthening law enforcement ties and working together to maintain international justice and fairness, reinforcing the broader goals of the initiative.
