Import From India: Pakistan Railways sued over locomotives lease

Petitioner argues that the government ought to utilise its own resources rather than lease from India.

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Friday issued notice to the federal government on a petition challenging Pakistan Railways’ decision to lease locomotives from India.

Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan ordered the railways secretary to file a reply within two weeks.

Advocate Ansar Jaspal had filed the petition saying that the federal government had decided to lease 50 locomotives from India to improve train service.

He said that the Risalpur Factory had the capacity to manufacture 25 locomotives per year and the government should utilise its own resources and should not lease these from India.

The petitioner also asked the court to direct the railways to renovate its 450 out-of-order locomotives.
