LAHORE:

The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has expressed deep concern over restrictions on press freedom and the challenges faced by the print media industry in the country.

The concerns were raised during a meeting of CPNE's Standing Committee, chaired by President Irshad Ahmed Arif, who emphasized the critical role of print media in promoting responsible journalism.

He noted that while social media platforms are often the source of government complaints, the mainstream media unfairly bears the consequences, facing increasing threats to its independence.

Arif said punitive measures against media organizations and journalists are on the rise, adding that despite government claims of national progress, the print media is in a state of decline due to official neglect.

Those present at the meeting included Secretary General Ejazul Haq, Senior Vice President Anwar Sajidi, Deputy Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, vice presidents Amir Mehmood, Tahir Farooq, Yahya Khan Sadozai, Babar Nizami, joint secretaries Arif Baloch, Munazza Seham, Rafay Niazi, Waqas Tariq Farooq, Finance Secretary Hamid Hussain Abidi, Information Secretary Zia Tanoli, and members including Kazim Khan, Ayaz Khan, Abdul Khaliq Ali, Abdul Rehman Mangrio, Aslam Mian, Bilal Aslam, Bashir Ahmed Memon, Dr Jabbar Khattak, Dr Zubair Mehmood, Fazal Haq, Qazi Asad Abid, Maqsood Yousafzai, Muhammad Aslam Khalid, Muhammad Owais Razi, Sajjad Abbasi, Sardar Muhammad Siraj, Shehzad Amin, Shakeel Ahmed Turabi, Sher Muhammad, Syed Masoor Zanjani, and Zulfiqar Ahmed Rahat.
