The Islamabad chief commissioner has approved a significant increase in vehicle transfer fees, with rates surging by up to 300 per cent in some categories.
The revised fee structure also includes a tenfold hike in charges for motorcycles above 400cc.
These new rates took effect immediately on Monday, April 14.
Under the updated policy, the transfer fee for vehicles up to 1000cc has been raised from Rs1,200 to Rs2,750.
For cars between 1000cc and 1800cc, the fee has increased from Rs2,000 to Rs5,500.
Vehicles exceeding 1800cc will now incur a fee of Rs11,000, up from the previous Rs3,000.
For the first time, electric vehicles have also been brought under the fee structure.
An EV with a capacity of up to 50 kilowatts will be charged Rs2,500.
Those ranging between 50 and 100 kilowatts will pay Rs5,500, while the transfer fee for electric vehicles above 100 kilowatts has been set at Rs10,000.
Motorcycle transfer fees have been revised as well. The fee for bikes up to 200cc has gone up from Rs150 to Rs550. For motorcycles between 200cc and 400cc, the fee has been set at Rs1,000.
Motorcycles above 400cc will now cost Rs1,500 to transfer ownership, a steep rise from the previous Rs150. All transfer fees are to be deposited in the designated account of the Ministry of Finance.
Sources indicate that the move aligns Islamabad's fee structure with that of Punjab. Previously, vehicle transfer charges in the capital were lower than in other provinces.
