Charli XCX has come under criticism from Green Day fans after she appeared at a Coachella 2025 afterparty wearing a sash reading “Miss Should Be Headliner".

The moment, which circulated widely on social media, followed her Main Stage performance on Saturday, 12 April, where she was joined by artists including Troye Sivan, Billie Eilish, and Lorde.

Charli’s set was held before Green Day’s headline slot. Shortly after, images of the sash prompted debate across social platforms, with some fans calling the gesture disrespectful in light of Green Day’s politically charged performance. During their set, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong altered lyrics in “Jesus of Suburbia” to reference the Palestinian genocide, drawing attention to current global issues.

Critics of Charli XCX argued that the timing and nature of the sash clashed with the message Green Day brought to their set. One fan wrote, “Artists are supposed to stand for something, not be petty losers,” while another added, “Even if you think she should’ve headlined, wearing that sash was unnecessary.”

Green Day has a history of adjusting lyrics to reflect current events. In past performances, they have referenced political figures and global conflicts, with recent adaptations including commentary on the MAGA movement and support for Palestine.

Charli XCX, who performed several songs from her remix album ‘Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat’, received praise for her set but also faced questions about perceived competitiveness. While some fans supported her expression of confidence, others viewed the move as a slight against an established act with decades in the industry.
