Catherine O'Hara has joined The Last of Us season 2 as Gail, a new character introduced in the premiere episode titled "Future Days."

Gail is the only therapist in the community and works with Joel, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, helping him process past experiences. The role was originally considered for season 1 but was introduced in the second season by showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.

O'Hara describes the scenes with Pascal as demanding and says the creative process was clear and supportive. "Craig was just very clear. He really knows what he's doing," O'Hara explained.

The upcoming episode featuring Gail's husband Eugene, played by Joe Pantoliano, is expected to explore the past events referenced in the season premiere and provide deeper insight into the characters’ histories. It is being compared in tone to season 1’s Emmy-winning episode focused on Bill and Frank.

While she is known for comedic roles, O'Hara accepted the part after meeting with Mazin and because her son is working on the series' production team. She explained that the filming process required multiple takes of emotionally challenging scenes. "I've never had to cry so much for so many takes. It was killer," she said.

New episodes of The Last of Us season 2 will drop weekly on Sundays at 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
