Authorities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have issued a heatwave alert as temperatures across the province are forecast to rise significantly in the coming days.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said in a statement on Saturday that most districts are expected to experience a gradual increase in daytime temperatures from Monday, Express News reported.
Daytime highs could rise by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, while dry and dusty winds may affect some areas in the afternoon and evening.
The Met Office warned that prolonged heat and dry conditions could increase the risk of heatstroke and strain water resources.
The PDMA has directed all district administrations and relevant departments to take precautionary measures. The agency urged the public to avoid direct sun exposure between 10am and 5pm, especially elderly people and children.
Farmers have been advised to ensure adequate water supply for their crops, while the Health Department has been instructed to keep heatstroke centres operational. Paramedics and rescue teams have been placed on alert.
Instructions have also been issued to safeguard livestock and pets during the heatwave.
Drivers have been advised to check their vehicle’s engine coolant and tyre pressure before travelling. The PDMA said its emergency operation centre is fully functional and citizens can report emergencies via the 1700 helpline.
