A spell of rain and hailstorms swept across Punjab on Thursday, bringing much-needed relief after days of intense heat.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a western weather system entered the province, triggering rainfall in Lahore and other major districts including Chakwal, Faisalabad, Jhelum, Joharabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sargodha, Toba Tek Singh, and Jhang.
In Lahore, the temperature dropped significantly, with highs now expected between 29°C and 26°C. The change in weather was accompanied by intervals of rain throughout the morning, with hail reported in some areas.
Citizens welcomed the pleasant turn in weather, which followed temperatures that soared up to 40°C earlier in the week, exacerbated by dry conditions.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) mobilised teams to manage drainage and ensure smooth water flow to prevent urban flooding.
The Met Office expects the rain system to move out of the region by tonight, with another spell of pleasant weather expected to follow from Friday.
However, Sindh is expected to experience an intense heatwave over the weekend, with temperatures forecast to rise as high as 48°C in some districts, according to PMD.
The hottest conditions are likely in Mohenjo Daro and Dadu, where highs may touch 48°C and 47°C respectively, with low humidity levels intensifying the heat impact.
Nawabshah, Sukkur, and Mithi are also expected to see highs above 44°C, while Hyderabad will hover around 41°C with high humidity of up to 80%, increasing discomfort for residents.
Karachi is likely to remain comparatively milder, with maximum temperatures between 36°C and 38°C, but elevated humidity at 77% will continue to create a sticky and warm environment.
Meteorologists have urged people to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours. Emergency services and healthcare providers have also been advised to remain alert for heat-related cases.
