Luka Dončić became visibly emotional on Wednesday night during his first return to Dallas since being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks honoured their former star with a heartfelt two-minute tribute video ahead of tipoff, bringing the crowd — and Dončić himself — to tears at the American Airlines Center.

Dončić, who led the Mavericks for over six seasons and was pivotal in their 2024 NBA Finals run, requested a towel before the video began. As the tribute played during player introductions, the visibly moved star wiped away tears, overwhelmed by the crowd's standing ovation and chants of “Luka! Luka! Luka!”
On the court, Dončić put on a masterclass. He scored 45 points — tying his season high — shooting 16-of-28 from the field, with seven three-pointers. He also added eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals, helping the Lakers secure a 112-97 win and clinch a playoff berth. It marked Dončić’s 46th career 40-point game.
With 1:34 remaining in regulation, Dončić checked out of the game to another thunderous ovation, clapping to the fans as he made his way to the bench. Among the attendees was Mavericks icon and Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki, who was present to show support.
Though now wearing Lakers colours, Dončić’s bond with the Dallas fanbase remains unshaken. His emotional homecoming underscored not only his personal legacy but also the profound connection he still shares with the franchise and city that helped shape his NBA career.
