Bill Hader reveals he was fired from a movie theater job for spoiling Titanic’s ending to mocking customers.

Before becoming an Emmy-winning actor and Saturday Night Live standout, Bill Hader once worked at a movie theater—until he was fired for spoiling Titanic in an act of petty revenge. During his appearance on Netflix’s Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, Hader recounted the moment that led to his dismissal.

According to Hader, a sorority had booked a private showing of Titanic before its official release. As they gathered at the entrance, he asked them to move so others could pass through. Instead of cooperating, they mocked his appearance, comparing him to Charles Manson. “I had a bowtie and cummerbund on, and they just made fun of me,” Hader said.

Frustrated, Hader decided to spoil the movie’s ending as he tore their tickets. “I said, ‘Enjoy the movie. The boat sinks at the end. Leo dies,’” he recalled. “They didn’t believe me, so I added, ‘You think he’s asleep, but he’s frozen.’”

His manager, though entertained, had no choice but to fire him. “He came down smiling and said, ‘Hey Bill, I have to fire you.’ He loved it, but couldn’t look me in the eye,” Hader said.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack, famously dies at the end of Titanic—a scene that has sparked decades of debate. Director James Cameron addressed the controversy in 2022, stating that scientific testing confirmed only one person could have survived on the floating door.
