'Speeding' ambulance injures pedestrian, driver in custody

Says he was rushing a pregnant woman to the hospital, with the ambulance's siren on

KARACHI:

A female pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by an ambulance from a welfare organisation on Thursday. The accident occurred on New MA Jinnah Road, within the jurisdiction of the Jamshed Quarters police station.

The injured woman, identified as Gul Bano, was rushed to Civil Hospital. According to SHO Jamshed Quarter Rashraf Jogi, Bano, a domestic worker, was injured after being struck by a speeding ambulance while crossing the road. Police have taken the welfare organisation's ambulance and its driver, Muhammad Ali, into custody. The SHO further stated that the ambulance was speeding and that the driver failed to stop, leading to the accident. The driver's license had expired, and the woman's condition is reported to be critical.

On the other hand, the driver provided his version of events, stating that he was responding to an emergency, with the ambulance's siren on, and that he was rushing a pregnant woman to the hospital. He claimed that the injured woman was running across the road and had already collided with another vehicle before coming in front of the ambulance.

The driver said that after the incident, he arranged for the pregnant woman to be taken to the hospital in a rickshaw and also sent the injured woman to the hospital in another rickshaw.

Meanwhile, Saad Edhi took notice of the incident and confirmed that the injured woman is receiving medical treatment at Civil Hospital. He stated that if the driver is found at fault, legal action will be taken accordingly. However, if the woman's family chooses to forgive, it will be their decision, and if they opt for legal proceedings, the necessary action will be taken.
