KARACHI:

The Women Confederation Trust hosted an Iftar dinner for the transgender community, where ration was also distributed, in an initiative to promote inclusivity and solidarity.

A large number of transpeople adorning mehndi and wearing bangles participated in the gathering, which aimed to bring joy to marginalised segments of society and foster social harmony. Traditional dance performances added to the festive atmosphere, uplifting the spirits of all attendees.

Raiyatullah Khan, aka Khan Baba, an organiser, said that the event will drive positive social change. "This Iftar was more than just a meal - it was a gesture of love and solidarity with the transgender community," he said. Khan also announced plans to convene a Jirga to address the rights and challenges faced by transpeople.

Participants expressed gratitude, saying that such events reinforce their sense of dignity and belonging. However, they also highlighted the discrimination and violence they endure, particularly during Ramazan. "Even stepping outside becomes a challenge, and we often face harassment, whether on the streets or while receiving basic necessities like ration," said one participant.

The transgender community also reflected on their historical significance, tracing their roots to the Mughal era when they were part of cultural and literary circles. Despite this legacy, they continue to struggle for societal acceptance.

"We fast, pray, and contribute to society like everyone else, yet we face rejection even from our own families," they lamented.
