An announcement heard in footage posted on X instructed: “Due to a reported emergency, all passengers leave the station immediately.”
The incident led to a temporary suspension of all Underground services stopping at the station, forcing many passengers to divert their routes via nearby stations, including Charing Cross and Waterloo East.
One commuter described the scene as “fun and games” and said the disruption required a reroute using SouthEastern services.
Transport for London confirmed the station had reopened by around 7 a.m. No confirmation was given as to whether a fire had occurred.
Waterloo Station, located in central London, is the country’s largest station by floor area and has the most platforms of any UK railway terminal.
