Cristiano Ronaldo endured a dramatic night as Portugal secured a 5-3 aggregate victory over Denmark to book their place in the Nations League semi-finals.
The quarter-final ended 3-3 on aggregate after 90 minutes before Francisco Trincao and Goncalo Ramos struck in extra time to seal Portugal’s progression.
Denmark’s Patrick Dorgu conceded an early penalty after bringing down Ronaldo, but Kasper Schmeichel denied the Portugal captain with a low save to his left.
However, Portugal took the lead seven minutes before the break when Fulham defender Joachim Andersen inadvertently headed Bruno Fernandes' corner into his own net.
Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside just before half-time, and Denmark levelled in the 52nd minute through Rasmus Kristensen’s back-post header. The Portugal captain eventually found the net in the 72nd minute, scoring from close range after Schmeichel had initially saved Fernandes’ shot.
This was Ronaldo's 136th goal for Portugal, extending his record for most international goals by a Male footballer. In addition, it was also his 929th career goal.
Denmark responded four minutes later as Christian Eriksen converted Dorgu’s low cross to restore their aggregate lead, but Portugal forced extra time through Trincao’s powerful strike from the edge of the box with four minutes left in regulation.
Trincao netted his second just seconds into extra time, firing in after Schmeichel had stopped Goncalo Ramos' effort. Ramos then completed the scoring in the 115th minute, tapping in from Diogo Jota’s pass.
Before kick-off, Bernardo Silva was honoured with a commemorative trophy for earning his 100th cap for Portugal, becoming the eighth player to achieve the milestone.
Portugal will face Germany in the semi-finals after Julian Nagelsmann’s side defeated Italy 5-4 on aggregate. Denmark will now turn their attention to World Cup qualifying, where they face Scotland in Group C.
