Apple TV+ continues to operate at a loss, with the streaming service reportedly losing more than $1 billion per year, despite having 45 million subscribers.
According to a report from The Information, Apple spends approximately $4.5 billion annually on content, down from previous years when spending reached $5 billion.
Apple has not officially disclosed financial details or subscriber counts for Apple TV+, as its streaming business is grouped under the company’s broader Services segment, which also includes Apple Music, the App Store, and other digital services. In Q4 2024, Apple’s Services revenue hit $26.3 billion, marking a 14% year-over-year increase.
Despite these losses, Apple TV+ has built a strong lineup of original shows and movies. Popular Apple TV+ series include Emmy-winning hits like Ted Lasso (renewed for Season 4), The Morning Show, Severance, Silo, Shrinking, and Slow Horses. The platform also offers blockbuster films such as Killers of the Flower Moon, CODA, Fly Me to the Moon, and The Family Plan.
Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month (or $99.99 per year) in the U.S. Unlike competitors, Apple has yet to introduce an ad-supported subscription tier. Since its launch in November 2019, the streaming service has expanded to over 100 countries and regions.
While Apple’s streaming losses may seem significant, they are minor in the context of the company’s $391 billion in annual revenue and $93.7 billion in net profit from fiscal year 2024, primarily driven by iPhone sales.
