Sindh, K-P replies sought to plea for Quran teaching
A five-member Supreme Court, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, on Wednesday sought replies from Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa governments to a plea for compulsory teaching of holy Quran in the country.
During a hearing, the federal government, besides the Punjab and the Balochistan governments ha submitted their replies to the plea, while the Sindh and K-P governments sought time for their submissions on the matter.
At the outset, Justice Jamal Mandokhail remarked that according to the response, the federal government had initiated measures for the teaching of the Holy Quran. "Let the government do its work," he said, asking why the court should interfere.
The petitioner told the court that according to the law, only that translation of the holy Quran could be used on which there was general consensus. The petitioner added that it was also mandatory for the federal government to approve the translation.
The court sought replies from the Sindh and the K-P governments on the issue and adjourned the hearing indefinitely.
