Minister reveals expenditure details in written response to NA

Details of the total expenses incurred in managing protests in the capital over the past five years have been revealed.

In his written response submitted to the National Assembly on Wednesday, Federal Minister for Interior, Mohsin Naqvi, said in the year 2019-2020, a total of over Rs157.7 million were spent by the government on handling protests in the federal capital.

The Interior Minister informed the National Assembly in writing that in 2020-2021, over Rs96.1 million were spent by the government to manage protests. In 2021-2022, handling protests in the capital cost Rs277.9 million. In 2022-2023, a total of Rs724 million were spent on managing protests. In 2023-2024, the total expenditure for handling protests was Rs100 million. Over the five years, the government had to spend over Rs1.35 billion to manage protests.

In the 2023 Greece boat disaster, 262 out of 300 Pakistanis lost their lives. The minister also mentioned that in 2024, five Pakistanis died in the Greece boat disaster, while 10 died in the Morocco boat disaster, and 16 lost their lives in the Libya boat disaster.
