Woman charged with murder in Telemundo reporter’s death as investigators probe past allegations
Authorities in Louisiana announced that a woman previously charged with theft and fraud in connection with the death of Telemundo reporter Adan Manzano will now face a second-degree murder charge, NBC News reported on March 19.
Danette Colbert, 48, was booked into the Jefferson Parish jail on the charge, Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley confirmed. Manzano, 27, was found dead in a hotel room in Kenner, Louisiana, on February 5. Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerald Cvitanovich stated that Manzano’s death resulted from a mix of alprazolam, commonly known as Xanax, and ethanol, a combination that can dangerously depress the central nervous system. Positional asphyxia was listed as a contributing factor, with Manzano discovered face down in a pillow.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how Manzano obtained the medication, and his manner of death remains undetermined. During a bond hearing last month, a Kenner police investigator stated that Manzano did not have a prescription for the drug, which was also found at Colbert’s residence.
Colbert has a history of fraud-related charges, with past accusations involving alleged drugging of victims. While authorities have not yet disclosed how Manzano obtained the alprazolam found in his system, they continue to investigate whether Colbert played a direct role in his death. Her attorney has not responded to requests for comment but previously stated she should not be judged based on her past offenses.
In a related development, authorities arrested a second suspect, Ricky White, in Florida. White, described as a transient, faces charges including robbery, bank fraud, and illegal transmission of monetary funds. He is awaiting extradition.
Colbert has been in custody since February 7 without bond. Investigators are also examining whether Colbert may be connected to other similar cases, as multiple individuals have come forward with allegations against her.
