Xfer Records has officially released Serum 2, a major update to its popular wavetable synthesizer plugin.

This update significantly expands its synthesis capabilities by adding new oscillator types, making Serum 2 a powerful multi-engine synth.

Developed by Steve Duda, Serum has long been a favorite among producers, often outshining NI’s Massive. Now, Serum 2 takes things even further with new features, and best of all, it’s a free update for existing users.

The most significant change in Serum 2 is the introduction of multiple oscillator engines. While the original focused primarily on wavetable synthesis, the new version brings multi-samples, granular synthesis, sample-based oscillators, and spectral synthesis. This diverse range of synthesis methods enables users to create more complex and dynamic sounds.

The sample and multi-sample engines include classic sampler features such as looping with snap detection, flexible loop modulation, tape-stop effects, real-time sample slicing, and FM/PD/Distortion capabilities. The spectral oscillator offers real-time harmonic resynthesis and transient detection, allowing for more intricate sound-shaping possibilities.

Additionally, the original wavetable engine now features smooth interpolation, enabling seamless transitions between waveforms. The introduction of new warp modes further expands modulation options by enhancing FM, phase distortion, and filtering capabilities.

Serum 2 also comes with numerous other updates, including flexible effects routing, a redesigned arpeggiator and clip sequencer, and an expanded LFO engine with a wider variety of shapes. It also offers four additional macro controls, making sound manipulation more intuitive. Moreover, the update introduces 626 new presets and 288 wavetables, giving users an extensive library to work with.

Serum 2 is available now at an introductory price of $189, with a regular price of $249. Existing users of Serum 1 can upgrade for free. The plugin is compatible with 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX.
