Peshawar's historic market sells brooms
Ghanta Ghar in Peshawar
The Kaka Jamadar neighborhood, located near the historic Raiti Bazaar and Ghanta Ghar in Peshawar, has evolved over time and is now known as Jharoo Wali Gali (Broom Street) or Pankhe Wali Gali (Fan Street), where handmade brooms and traditional fans are sold.
Before the creation of Pakistan, the area was named Kaka Jamadar, after a British-era military officer who lived there. Over time, the neighborhood became known for selling handmade fans, which were widely used before the advent of electricity.
Following Pakistan's independence, the hand-fan trade continued to thrive, leading to the area's name changing to Pankhe Wali Gali (Fan Street).
Today, the market not only offers hand-fans but also traditional brooms made from locally sourced materials, earning it the alternate name Jharoo Wali Gali (Broom Street).
In addition to these traditional items, the market has expanded to include modern wipers and cleaning tools. However, only a handful of old shopkeepers remain dedicated to selling handmade brooms and manual fans, preserving the area's rich heritage.
