ISLAMABAD:

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) Thursday concluded its first orientation workshop for the newly-appointed university heads under the Modern University Governance (MUG) Programme for University Management.

A total of 25 newly-appointed vice-chancellors (VCs) and rectors of different universities attended the two-day workshop held at the commission secretariat. The purpose of the workshop was to share HEC initiatives with the
university heads and get their feedback.

The VCs discussed their role and relationship with HEC and their respective provincial governments. They defined their respective institutions’ vision, mission, strategic planning framework and expectations from HEC and its partner organisations.

The VC of the University of Birmingham and deputy VC of University of Wales joined in via video chat to discuss leadership and good governance in higher education institutions. Dr Mary Linda Armacost, the former president of two US universities, conducted a session on “Institutional heads’ role as educational leaders”.

HEC Chairperson Dr Javaid Laghari, the chief guest on the occasion, emphasized the role of university heads as leaders for faculty members, administrative staff, as well as the students. Laghari said that MUG Programme for University Management will ensure that the management system of universities is equipped with the best of leadership and governance tools, which will facilitate and support academia in the most efficient and effective manner.

“We believe that all guidance should come from the VCs while HEC should act as an implementing authority,” he said, adding that the feedback and suggestions they put forward will be given due consideration.

He said that the MUG programme will become a regular feature of HEC initiatives.

Transferring English skills

HEC Executive Director Dr Sohail Naqvi and British Council Country Director Dr David Martin Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch Transforming English Language Skills (TELS) programme under English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR) Project.

The programme is expected to help university students in developing proficiency in learning English language for better employability.
