Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Snow White is drawing significant controversy ahead of its release, with debates surrounding its diverse casting, feminist themes, and the political views of its stars.

The film, which features Latina actress Rachel Zegler in the title role, has sparked backlash from both conservative critics and members of the dwarfism community.

Diverse casting controversy

Zegler’s casting as Snow White, a character traditionally depicted with “skin as white as snow,” has generated criticism, with some questioning the decision due to the racial difference between the character and the actress.

Zegler, who identifies as Latina, defended her casting in 2022, citing the popularity of Snow White in Spanish-speaking countries and expressing pride in representing her heritage. The film’s plot, according to Zegler, will address the character’s name by explaining that Snow White survives a snowstorm as a child.

Dwarfism debate

The film’s portrayal of the Seven Dwarves has also sparked controversy. Peter Dinklage, known for his role in Game of Thrones and a vocal advocate for people with dwarfism, criticized Disney in 2022 for perpetuating outdated stereotypes by including the Dwarves in the remake.

Dinklage questioned why Disney was promoting a progressive casting choice for Snow White while continuing with the problematic portrayal of the dwarves.

In response, Disney stated it had consulted with the dwarfism community to ensure a more sensitive depiction. However, leaked footage from the film showed that only one actor with dwarfism was cast, with the remaining Dwarves portrayed by actors of different races.

This decision has drawn criticism, with some claiming it undermines opportunities for actors with dwarfism, while others, including right-wing commentators like Megyn Kelly, accused Disney of racializing the casting to an excessive degree.

Feminist reinterpretation

Zegler’s remarks in 2023, suggesting the film would be more feminist than the original 1937 animated classic, further fueled controversy. Zegler stated that Snow White would no longer be “saved by the prince” and would instead focus on becoming a leader in her own right.

Conservative critics, including Ben Shapiro, criticized the film for turning Snow White into a “girl boss.” Zegler later clarified that the film still features a love story, but that Snow White's character would also seek independence and leadership, not just romantic fulfillment.

Political backlash

In addition to the film’s themes, political views expressed by its stars have also sparked controversy. Zegler, who has been outspoken against former President Donald Trump, faced backlash after posting critical remarks about him and his supporters on social media.

She later apologised for the comments. Zegler’s pro-Palestinian stance has also led to criticism from some, especially due to her public disagreements with Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who has supported Israel in the ongoing Israels war on Gaza.

These contrasting political views have led to calls for a boycott of the film from both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups.

Box office expectations

Despite the backlash, Snow White is expected to perform well at the box office. Industry experts project the film could gross up to $53 million during its opening weekend, making it the second-biggest opening of the year, behind Captain America: Brave New World. Disney’s decision to host a smaller premiere for the film, excluding most media outlets, is seen as an effort to control the narrative ahead of its release.

The film's premiere comes just weeks after Captain America: Brave New World sparked its own anti-“woke” backlash, following remarks made by Anthony Mackie about the meaning of America. Both films have faced scrutiny over their inclusivity and political stances, reflecting the broader debate around Hollywood's evolving approach to diversity and representation.

As Snow White prepares for its release, all eyes will be on its box office performance and the continued reactions from audiences and critics alike.
