ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court has adjourned, for a month, the hearing of the Punjab government's appeals against Lahore High Court (LHC) judgments granting bail in cases related to the May 9 and 10 events. The court will resume hearing the appeals after the Eid holidays in April 2025.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi, and comprising Justice Musarrat Hilali and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb, was scheduled to hear the appeals.

The adjournment was granted at the request of the Punjab government's counsel, Advocate Zulfiqar Naqvi, who appeared before the court and sought additional time. The counsel argued that he needed more time to study the cases and prepare his arguments, as he had only recently been appointed by the government to represent all appeals seeking the cancellation of bails granted by the LHC in connection with the same event.

The Chief Justice noted that similar cases were already scheduled before the court in the coming days. Expressing his displeasure, he remarked that the prosecutor had requested time the previous day, and now the counsel was doing the same. He pointed out that there were more than 50 such cases of appeals from the provincial government for the cancellation of bail.

The counsel requested the court to adjourn all such cases scheduled for the current week so he could prepare for the cases listed in the coming weeks.
