Water conservation is elemental in mitigating the effects of impending drought, said the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry-Policy Advisory Board (FPCCI-PAB) Chairman Mian Zahid Hussain.
He drew the attention of the authorities towards severe water scarcity, which is posing a serious threat to the country's agricultural sector and economy.
He stated that Pakistan is fundamentally an agricultural country, there is a significant lack of attention to water conservation, even as water wastage reaches alarming levels. The current water shortage in the country has reached seriously low levels, increasing the risk of drought.
If drought conditions develop in Punjab and Sindh, the public and the economy will suffer. Therefore, policymakers must take immediate action to address this pressing issue. He pointed out that insufficient rainfall this year is expected to cause water reserves in the Tarbela and Mangla Dams to drop to their lowest levels, which could substantially impact agriculture in Punjab and Sindh. The consequences will be severe, with farmers facing significant financial losses and food prices skyrocketing.
It is crucial to prevent food shortages across the country, as this could add more to the prevailing political unrest.
