Health experts warn against deep-fried foods

They recommended opting for healthier alternatives such as grilled meats

ISLAMABAD:

As people begin fasting for Ramazan, health experts have issued a warning about the dangers of consuming deep-fried foods, a staple in many iftar meals.

Nutritionists caution that items like samosas, spring rolls, and fried doughnuts are high in calories, fat, and sodium, which can lead to dehydration, digestive issues, and other health complications, especially during prolonged fasting hours. They recommended opting for healthier alternatives such as grilled meats, steamed vegetables, and fresh fruits.

Nutritionist, Dr Saima Khan, stressed that fasting during Ramazan already places physical demands on the body, and consuming oily, processed foods can worsen dehydration and digestion-related issues. "Ramazan is a time for spiritual and physical renewal. Making informed food choices ensures a healthier and more fulfilling fasting experience," she added.

Dr Talha Imad, another nutritionist, warned that consuming excessive fried and sugary foods can lead to bloating, lethargy, and difficulty in focusing on prayers and daily activities. He recommended breaking the fast with dates and water to replenish energy levels naturally, followed by meals rich in lean proteins, whole grains, and fiber. "Fresh fruits and nuts are excellent snack choices, while sugary drinks and desserts should be consumed in moderation," he advised.
