WATCH: Fiery debate between Hafeez, Shoaib Akhtar about 90s cricket legacy

Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Hafeez debate Pakistan’s 90s cricket legacy, sparking a heated exchange.

Mohammad Hafeez turned heads with his recent remarks about Pakistan's 90s cricket team, claiming that they left no legacy for future generations.

Shoaib Malik, who was also involved, started the debate with a sly dig at Shoaib Akhtar about his generation's ability to win 2 major ICC trophies - the ICC T20I World Cup 2009 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Hafeez took over the debate, claiming the 90's players did not leave any real legacy for Pakistani cricket.

"I am a huge fan of those who played in the 1990s, but when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan. They didn't win an ICC event – they lost the World Cups of 1996, 1999, and 2003," Hafeez said. "We reached one final in 1999 and lost that badly."

Hafeez, often referred to as "The Professor" for his analytical approach to the game, argued that the 2009 T20 World Cup victory under Younis Khan provided real inspiration for future generations.

He also pointed to Pakistan's 2017 Champions Trophy win, suggesting that even though Babar Azam didn’t play a major role in that tournament, his presence helped shape his stardom today.

The former captain’s comments didn’t sit well with Shoaib Akhtar, one of the biggest stars to emerge from that era, leading to a heated debate.

Akhtar, known for his fiery pace on and off the field, shot back. "These 73 ODIs that Pakistan won against India – it is us who won them," he stated, defending his era’s contribution to Pakistan cricket.

Hafeez attempted to backtrack by saying the 90s team carried forward Imran Khan’s legacy, but Akhtar was quick to cut him off. "No, you can't cover it up now. Leave it. This video has already been made. You've already spoken about all the big players," he teased.

The exchange has reignited the age-old debate over whether cricketing greatness is measured by trophies or by overall impact.

While the 90s team boasted legends like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Inzamam-ul-Haq, their failure to lift an ICC trophy after Imran Khan's 1992 heroics has remained a blot on their record.

As for Hafeez and Akhtar, it seems this debate isn’t cooling down anytime soon.
