Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan refused to charge interest on the amount he had invested in filmmaker Renu Chopra’s production of Ittefaq (2017), calling it “haraam” (forbidden) for him.
Chopra, wife of the late director Ravi Chopra, has praised Khan for his generosity in financing her son Abhay Chopra’s directorial debut despite her financial struggles at the time.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Chopra recalled how Khan stepped in to support the 2017 neo-noir thriller, even without reading the script. "I told him, ‘I don’t have money,’ and he said, ‘I’ll put in the money.’ I told him that my son would make the movie with his heart," she said.
She revealed that Khan refused to charge interest on the amount invested. "And to this day… the money was always 50-50 down the line. And when the movie was completed, there was normally an interest rate. He said, ‘No, this is forbidden for me. I won’t take it,’" she added.
Khan’s belief in Abhay’s vision was unwavering. "His principle was, ‘I never back the horse; I back the jockey.’ He said, ‘If your son is backing it, I’ll back it,’" Chopra recalled.
Ittefaq was co-written by Abhay Chopra, Nikhil Mehrotra, and Shreyas Jain and was an adaptation of the 1969 Yash Chopra film of the same name. Starring Sidharth Malhotra, Akshaye Khanna, and Sonakshi Sinha, the thriller grossed ₹51.47 crore worldwide, performing moderately at the box office.
Khan will next be seen in the action-thriller King, directed by Siddharth Anand. The film reportedly features his daughter, Suhana Khan, and Abhishek Bachchan in key roles.
During an event at Dubai’s Global Village, he teased the project, saying, "I’m not just shooting it here; I’m shooting it in Mumbai now when I go back in a couple of months. My director, Siddharth Anand, is very strict. He made Pathaan, so he is very strict. He said, ‘Don’t tell people about the film or what you are doing in it.’ So I can’t tell you, but I can assure you it will entertain you; you will have fun."
