A 27-year-old dancer and event manager died in a road accident early Monday after her car crashed while allegedly fleeing a group of men who had been harassing her on National Highway 2 in India's West Bengal state.
Sutandra Chatterjee, a resident of the Indian city of Chandernagore, was travelling to Gaya, Bihar, for work when her vehicle overturned near Panagarh around 12:30 am.
She suffered fatal injuries, while at least two of her colleagues were wounded.
Police said the accident resulted from a failed overtaking attempt, but witnesses claim the white car’s occupants had been following Chatterjee’s vehicle for over 10 km, making obscene gestures and ramming it multiple times.
The other car was found abandoned at the crash site, and police have seized both vehicles. However, no arrests have been made.
Chatterjee, the sole breadwinner of her family, ran an event management company, Moonwalk, while supporting her ailing mother and two grandmothers.
Her mother, Tanushree Chatterjee, dismissed the police’s version of events and called for immediate action against those responsible.
