Australia vs South Africa Champions Trophy clash abandoned due to rain
Heavy rain forced the abandonment of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group B match between South Africa and Australia on Monday, with both teams awarded one point each.
Persistent showers throughout the day left the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium outfield waterlogged, making play impossible. The match officials waited for conditions to improve, but with no significant break in the rain, the decision was made to call off the game.
The result does not drastically alter the group standings but offers South Africa an advantage as they maintain their strong net run rate over Australia. England and Afghanistan, meanwhile, will now need to win both of their remaining fixtures to stay in contention for the semi-finals.
Whoever is defeated tomorrow in the England vs Afghanistan fixture will effectively be eliminated from the tournament.
Earlier in the day, weather forecasts had predicted afternoon showers in Rawalpindi, with a 64% chance of precipitation. The damp conditions made it increasingly unlikely for even a shortened game to take place, with the cut-off time of 7:05 pm for a 20-over-a-side contest abandoned due to condition of pitch covers.
With this result, both South Africa and Australia now turn their attention to their remaining group-stage fixtures as the race for the semi-finals intensifies.
