'Fasting okay for diabetics'
Renowned diabetes specialist and Professor of Medicine, Prof Zaman Sheikh has said that diabetic patients can fast during Ramazan following guidance from their physicians. He said, offering Taraweeh prayers is highly beneficial after which there remains no need of walk or exercise after Iftar.
Diabetic patients can adjust their insulin dosage in consultation with their doctors, Professor Zaman advised. He suggested higher units of insulin after Iftar and less units to half before Sehri.
During Iftar, Professor Zaman advised diabetic patients to consume two dates but avoid fried items like pakoras, khajla and pheni. He cautioned against consuming spicy and heavily seasoned foods at Iftar, as they can upset stomach.
He also emphasised the importance of breaking the fast if blood sugar level drops below 70. He warned against excessive eating during Iftar and Sehri, as this can adversely impact the stomach. He suggested light meals, such as yogurt, at Sehri and stressed the importance of drinking plenty of water between Iftar and Sehri.
He also cautioned against consuming soft drinks during Iftar. Soft drinks contain various chemicals that can cause a spike in blood sugar levels, making them extremely dangerous for diabetics.
