Hunter Schafer, the transgender actress known for playing Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Euphoria, has revealed that her newly issued U.S. passport incorrectly lists her as male, despite her identifying and selecting female during the application process.

"I was shocked," Schafer, 26, said in a TikTok video, displaying the 'M' marker on her new passport. "I just didn't think it was actually going to happen."

Schafer, who lost her previous passport while filming overseas, applied for a replacement using her correct gender marker. However, upon receiving the new document, she discovered that her gender had been changed.

She attributed this to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, which mandates that sex assigned at birth determines gender markers on all official documents. The U.S. State Department now only issues passports with 'M' or 'F' designations, removing the 'X' option introduced under the Biden administration for non-binary and gender-nonconforming individuals.

Trump's order states: "These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality."

Schafer, who will be traveling abroad soon, expressed concerns about potential difficulties at airport security due to the mismatch between her gender identity and passport designation.

"I'm pretty sure it's going to come along with having to out myself to border patrol agents much more often than I would like," she said.

Schafer emphasized the real-world impact of Trump’s policies, stating: "This is real, and it’s happening. No one—no matter how wealthy, white, or pretty—is excluded."

She clarified that she intended to share the video to raise awareness rather than incite fear, reaffirming, "Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. A letter and a passport can't change that."
