WATCH: Fakhar Zaman in tears after Champions Trophy 2025 exit
Pakistani opener Fakhar Zaman was seen emotional and in tears after being ruled out of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to an injury.
Fakhar Zaman injured himself while fielding in the first over of the match, falling awkwardly on the field. Following the injury, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that he was being evaluated for a muscular sprain.
Despite the injury, the left-handed batter batted at number four but was dismissed for 24 runs off 41 balls, with Michael Bracewell taking his wicket.
A video shared by the PCB on social media showed Zaman limping to the dressing room, visibly emotional. Teammate Shaheen Shah Afridi was seen offering support to the injured batter.
Imam, 29, who has represented Pakistan in 72 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), was named as Fakhar's replacement after the latter was ruled out due to an oblique injury.
“The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Imam-ul-Haq as a replacement for Fakhar Zaman in the Pakistan squad,” the committee said in a statement.
The left-handed batter also took to his social media handles to announce his departure from the rest of the tournament.
"Representing Pakistan on the biggest stage is an honour and dream of every cricketer in this country," he wrote on Instagram.
"I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride. Unfortunately I'm now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity. I will be backing our boys in green from home. This is only just the beginning, the comeback will be stronger than the setback. Pakistan Zindabad."
Meanwhile, in the tournament opener, defending champions Pakistan suffered a 60-run defeat against New Zealand.
Pakistan will now face arch-rivals India in their next fixture, a must-win encounter to keep their title defense hopes alive.
