The James Bond film franchise is entering a new era as longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson step down, handing creative control to Amazon MGM Studios.
The Broccoli family has overseen the iconic 007 films since Albert “Cubby” Broccoli launched the franchise in 1962.
With Amazon’s takeover, speculation is mounting over who will play the next James Bond and when the next installment will be released. Bookmakers’ favorites for the role include James Norton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Theo James.
Wilson, 83, cited a desire to focus on art and charity work, while Broccoli, 64, expressed pride in maintaining her father’s legacy. “With Michael retiring and No Time to Die concluding that chapter, it’s time for me to focus on other projects,” she said.
Amazon now has full control over future James Bond films and could expand the franchise through streaming spin-offs, similar to Star Wars on Disney+. Prime Video has already tested the waters with 007: Road to a Million, though the reality show received mixed reviews.
With no script, director, or title confirmed, the next Bond film could face a record-breaking gap between releases. Amazon MGM Studios head Mike Hopkins assured fans that they are committed to ushering in “the next phase of the legendary 007.”
