17-year-old Indian powerlifter, Yashika Acharya, tragically lost her life in a horrifying accident while training when a 270kg rod fell on her neck, Indian Media reported
The incident occurred on Tuesday at a gym in Bikaner, where Yashika was lifting weights under the supervision of her trainer. The heavy barbell suddenly slipped and landed on her neck, causing a fatal injury.
She was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. Her trainer sustained minor injuries, but his condition is stable.
According to police, Yashika's family has not yet initiated any legal action. Her post-mortem was completed on Wednesday, and her body was handed over to her relatives.
Yashika Acharya had achieved several notable successes in her short career, including winning a gold medal at the national level. Her untimely death has sent shockwaves through the sports community.
Powerlifting is a strength-based sport that includes events such as squats, bench press, and deadlifts. While not part of the Olympics, it is widely recognized internationally.
This tragic incident adds to the list of fatal accidents in sports. In 2014, Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes also lost his life after being struck by a bouncer during a match.
