Cabinet reconsiders universities law tweak today

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has summoned a meeting of his cabinet today (Saturday) to reconsider the Sindh Universities and Institutes Laws (Amendment) Bill that allows Grade 21 bureaucrats to be appointed as vice chancellors of public universities.

The provincial assembly passed the bill on January 31, but Governor Kamran Tessori referred it back to the house, raising objections and asking for a review. The governor has also summoned a session of the provincial assembly on February 17 at the request of the chief minister to deliberate on the bill in light of the governor's objections.

Provincial government spokesperson MPA Sadia Javed confirmed to The Express Tribune that the provincial assembly will convene on Monday.

According to the rules, if the assembly again passes the bill in its original form, it will become law without the governor's approval.

The cabinet will also approve the establishment of a Provincial Security Unit as well as consider increasing the age limit for government jobs.
