The US Coast Guard has unveiled a haunting audio recording that is believed to capture the acoustic signature of the Titan submersible’s catastrophic implosion, which occurred during its expedition to the Titanic wreck in June 2023.
The audio was recorded approximately 900 miles from the incident site by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) moored passive acoustic recorder.
The incident on June 18, 2023, resulted in the loss of all five passengers aboard the Titan.
The passengers included Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, businessman Hamish Harding, and French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The wreckage was later discovered, and DNA testing confirmed the identities of the deceased.
This newly released audio is part of an ongoing investigation into the incident by the US Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which included an extensive two-week inquiry in September.
The investigation painted a damning portrait of OceanGate, the company that operated the submersible, and its founder, Stockton Rush, who charged $250,000 per dive.
The Titan lost contact with its support ship on the morning of June 18, 2023, and failed to resurface.
An international search mission was launched to locate the vessel, which was ultimately found at the bottom of the ocean. Authorities confirmed that the submersible had suffered a “catastrophic implosion,” caused by extreme pressure. Remains believed to belong to the victims were recovered and matched to the five men through DNA testing.
