Karachi has initiated the production of driverless cars using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, marking a significant step forward in the country's tech innovation.

The project has already seen the launch of a virtual driving system, and work is underway to make these AI-driven vehicles a reality on the streets.

The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) at NED University of Engineering and Technology has spearheaded the project.

Engineers involved in the development have claimed that this is the first such initiative in Pakistan, with no other similar AI-driven driverless car projects currently underway in the country.

NED University is set to be the first institution in Pakistan to feature a driverless car on the roads in the near future, with test drives expected within six months.

For this ambitious project, a special electronic car has been imported from China and is currently being modified with AI tools to transform it into a fully autonomous vehicle.

In an exclusive conversation with Express, Project Director and Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Khurram said, “We are close to achieving real-time vehicle control.

Our engineers have made significant progress in data control and software development, and we are confident that within the next six months, we will be able to drive this car on NED’s roads.”

Research students associated with the project, Inzamam and Aleema, also shared that alongside AI, robotics techniques are being used. The vehicle’s mapping has been completed, and algorithms are now successfully addressing speed limits, object detection, and lane recognition.

They also highlighted that this progress is being made through virtual driving simulations, and work on signal light recognition and steering control is ongoing.

The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence at NED University is one of nine centres established by the federal government to promote research and development in AI technology.

This initiative marks an important milestone in Pakistan's technological advancement and is expected to have significant implications for the future of autonomous vehicles in the country.
