Mary Comans, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has been fired following a scandal involving the misallocation of $59 million in taxpayer funds.

The funds were used to cover luxury hotel accommodations in New York City for illegal immigrants, an action that directly contradicted President Trump’s executive orders.

Comans, along with three other FEMA officials, was terminated after an investigation revealed that they circumvented proper leadership channels to make the payments without authorization. Two program analysts and a grant specialist were also dismissed, according to an official statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the firings and emphasized that FEMA officials acted independently and irresponsibly in making the disbursements.

The payments to high-end NYC hotels drew public outrage, particularly after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) exposed the misuse of federal funds. Musk, who has been vocal about reducing government waste, called for the immediate clawback of the $59 million, accusing FEMA of gross insubordination and misusing funds meant for disaster relief efforts.

While the firings at FEMA are not related to the agency’s hurricane relief efforts in Florida and North Carolina, they come at a time when FEMA’s financial practices have been under scrutiny. DHS, under the leadership of Secretary Kristi Noem, has vowed to hold agency leaders accountable and ensure that future actions align with the will of the President and the American people.
