KARACHI:

Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon has clarified the confusion surrounding the entry of heavy traffic into the city. According to the law, essential goods like oil, water, construction materials, and other items can be transported.

IGP Memon said that he had requested a meeting with Justice Amjad Ali Sahito. The police aim to enhance their investigation processes. During the meeting with Justice Sahito, he discussed ways to improve investigation procedures. Additionally, he mentioned that SSP Hyderabad is currently on leave and will resume duty upon return.

He acknowledged widespread confusion regarding heavy traffic entry, which may give the impression that police are not working. However, the law permits heavy traffic to operate during the day for essential goods transportation, with around 42 items allowed.

IG Memon explained that restricting large tankers' entry into the city was decided in a meeting with the Chief Secretary. "We want no more accidents. District traffic officers have been instructed to restrict heavy traffic during the day," he said. "But if we stop water and oil tankers, people will claim we have blocked them."

The IG emphasised the need to balance mechanisms to prevent traffic accidents. Motor vehicle inspectors are responsible for inspecting vehicle fitness, but teams have been formed with traffic police to check vehicle fitness on roads.

Registered water tankers will only be inspected at hydrants, as decided in a meeting with the Chief Secretary. To curb traffic violations, suggestions include increasing fines for speeding and unfit vehicles. Vehicles driven without licenses will be impounded, and drivers who fail to obtain licenses will be arrested.
