Aaron Rodgers' time with the New York Jets has come to an end, with multiple reports confirming the quarterback and team are parting ways.
Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer first reported that the Jets informed Rodgers last week of their decision. The move follows months of speculation about the 41-year-old’s future, with both parties declining to confirm if their relationship would continue.
It was also reported by veteran NFL journalist Jordan Schultz on X (formerly Twitter).
Rodgers joined the Jets ahead of the 2023 season but suffered a torn Achilles tendon on the opening drive of his debut, ending his campaign instantly.
He returned in 2024, but the team struggled to a 5-12 record, leading to the dismissal of their head coach and ongoing turmoil behind the scenes.
His QBR of 48.1 ranked 25th among qualified quarterbacks, a stark contrast to his decorated tenure with the Green Bay Packers, where he won a Super Bowl and four MVP awards.
Financially, Rodgers was due to earn $37.5 million in 2025, with the Jets facing a $49 million dead cap charge if they cut him. However, delaying his release until after 1 June could spread that hit over two seasons and reduce the burden by $9.5 million.
It remains unclear whether Rodgers will continue his NFL career, as he is no longer considered an elite quarterback.
If he retires, the Jets will enter the 2025 season with veteran Tyrod Taylor as their most experienced option under centre. They hold the seventh pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, though this year’s quarterback class is not regarded as particularly strong.
