‘Unfair’ appointment challenged in court
Chairman of Sheikh Zayed Federal Post Graduate Medical Institute becomes a contentious post.
ISLAMABAD:
The chairman of the new Sheikh Zayed Federal Post Graduate Medical Institute Lahore was stayed from taking charge of his post by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday.
Justice Riaz Khan of the IHC also issued notices to the secretary Cabinet Division and board of governors of the institute for appointing Professor Zafar Iqbal as the new chairman of the institute.
Earlier, Dr Muhammad Saeed, who was the previous chairman of the institute, filed a writ petition challenging Iqbal’s appointment.
The petitioner counsel said that the Prime Minister (PM) appointed Zafar Iqbal as the new chairman of the institute on June 18 despite him not being eligible for the post.
He argued that an MBA is a crucial requirement for the post. Zafar Iqbal does not possess the degree. Dr Saeed, however, has the relevant qualification and two years experience as head of the institute, the lawyer said.
He told the court that the appointment was challenged in the Lahore High Court which decided the case in Dr Saeed’s favour. Later the divisional bench made some amendments to the decision.
A board was constituted to resolve the matter and Dr Anwar was made part of it, the lawyer claimed. Moreover, the cabinet division once again sent the name of Dr Anwar as the new chairman to the PM in July 2009.
