Donald Trump's latest pronouncement on Gaza is as reckless as it is detached from reality. In a bizarre and inflammatory claim, the US president suggested that Washington should take control of the war-ravaged enclave and develop it economically - after Palestinians are forcibly resettled elsewhere. This vision, outlined at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is diplomatically untenable and morally indefensible.

This proclamation echoes colonial-era fantasies of conquest and disregards the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. Gaza is not a "demolition site" to be cleared for redevelopment; it is home to generations of Palestinians who have endured war, blockade and displacement. Trump's remarks come at a time when the region is at its most volatile, with a fragile ceasefire barely holding. The forced displacement of Palestinians would amount to ethnic cleansing, a move that would be universally condemned and likely spark further violence across the Middle East. Even the closest US allies would struggle to justify such an extreme proposal. More alarmingly, Trump's claim exposes a deeply flawed understanding of the conflict. His simplistic, business-like approach - treating Gaza as a real estate project rather than a land with a people - demonstrates a dangerous lack of seriousness. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not an economic venture but a political struggle rooted in history and identity.

The US has long positioned itself as a mediator in the conflict, albeit with a pro-Israel tilt. Trump's latest statement, however, obliterates any pretence of neutrality. It is an endorsement of forced displacement and a blatant disregard for Palestinian aspirations. If this is a preview of Trump's foreign policy, it signals an era of even greater instability in the region.
