The official dress code for the 2025 Met Gala has been revealed, with menswear set to take the spotlight this year.

In alignment with the upcoming Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, attendees and designers will be encouraged to craft ensembles under the theme Tailored for You, Vogue announced Tuesday.

The star-studded gala, which helps raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute, is tied to the exhibit it promotes. This year’s showcase offers "a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world," according to the Met.

Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibit will highlight Black menswear trends throughout history and reshape the popular understanding of the "dandy."

Traditionally defined as "a man unduly devoted to style," the term became linked to Black men in 18th-century Europe when a trend emerged among smartly dressed servant staff. Initially imposed, it has since been reclaimed as a reflection of Black fashion’s evolution, influence, and appropriation over time.

"Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities," a Met press release accompanying the exhibit’s announcement states.

The Met Gala, chaired by Anna Wintour since 1995, will take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5.

The dress code, Tailored for You, aligns with the Superfine exhibit, which will be open to the public from May 6 to October 26.

According to Vogue, the theme is "purposefully designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation." As in previous years, some fashion houses will stay true to the theme’s literal meaning, while others will use it as a loose source of inspiration.
