Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series nears Hulu pilot order with Sarah Michelle Gellar
A sequel to the iconic supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer is close to receiving a pilot order at Hulu, sources confirm.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is reportedly in final negotiations to reprise her role as Buffy Summers, though the series will introduce a new Slayer as the primary protagonist, with Gellar appearing in a recurring role.
The series is being developed by showrunners and executive producers Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), while Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is set to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows banner. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer alongside Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton via Sandollar Productions. 20th Television and Searchlight Television are producing the project.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, created by Joss Whedon, ran from 1997 to 2003 and remains a pop culture phenomenon. Notably absent from the new project is Whedon, who faced allegations of fostering a toxic work environment on Buffy and its spinoff Angel.
While Hulu and 20th Television have yet to comment officially, industry insiders suggest the revival will build on Buffy’s legacy while introducing fresh narratives and characters.
This new installment joins Hulu’s growing slate of reboots and revivals, including Prison Break, Futurama, and King of the Hill. If greenlit, the Buffy sequel is set to be one of the most anticipated television projects in recent years, reigniting interest in the legendary franchise for a new generation.
