Naqvi, Sadiq discuss PTI's 'attitude'
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq met in Islamabad on Sunday, with discussions focusing on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) "attitude" during recent negotiations with the government.
A statement from the interior ministry said the two leaders deliberated on matters of mutual interest and the overall political situation in the country.
It added that the "PTI's attitude, despite the positive progress made by the government for negotiations," was also discussed.
Naqvi commended Sadiq's efforts in fostering dialogue between the opposition and the ruling coalition. "Ayaz Sadiq has played a commendable role in bringing together the government and opposition parties," the interior minister was quoted as saying.
The meeting also touched upon the country's "improving economic situation" and the government's initiatives to address public grievances.
The talks between the government and the PTI had initially commenced in December 2024 after more than a year of escalating tensions. However, despite weeks of discussions, negotiations faltered over key disagreements – primarily the formation of two judicial commissions and the release of PTI prisoners.
The PTI boycotted the fourth round of talks this week, protesting the government's delay in forming judicial commissions to investigate the events of May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024.
While the ruling coalition extended an invitation for PTI to rejoin the process through a proposed parliamentary committee, the opposition rejected the offer.
The negotiation teams comprised members from various political parties. The ruling coalition was represented by politicians from the PML-N, PPP, MQM-P, PML-Z and Balochistan Awami Party, while the opposition team included leaders from the PTI, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, and Sunni Ittehad Council.
