Imran, wife challenge £190m conviction in IHC

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, re-filed appeal against their conviction in the £190 million case in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday after removing the objections raised by the Registrar Office earlier this week.

The appeal was filed through Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry Advocate. They appealed to the court to declare the verdict of the accountability court null and void and acquit them. The appeal stated that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) maliciously misused its powers while filing the refrence.

Imran and Bibi were convicted in the NAB reference on January 17. The court awarded 14-year jail term to the PTI founder and seven-year jail to Bibi. Later, they challenged the ruling in the IHC but the Registrar's Office returned their appeal on January 27 with objections.

The appeal, which was re-filed on Friday, mentioned that "NAB's failure" in obtaining text of the agreement from Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA). Hence, it added, the prosecution had failed to present complete evidence.
