Khanpur Dam set to undergo annual cleaning; private firm gets contract

The annual desilting of Khanpur Dam, the primary water source for Rawalpindi and Islamabad, is set to begin on February 10 and continue until February 20.

As a result, water supply to both cities will remain suspended until February 23.

According to official sources, the desilting operation, part of the dam's annual maintenance programme.

They said the central filtration plant in Sangjani will also be cleaned during the period.

The Rawalpindi and Chaklala cantonment boards have urged residents, businesses, and commercial establishments to arrange alternative water sources and reduce consumption during the period.

Those in urgent need of water can contact the Water Supply Branch for assistance. Water supply from Khanpur Dam is expected to resume as normal on February 23.

The desilting operation, part of the dam's annual maintenance programme, will cover the entire stretch from Khanpur Dam to the Sangjani filtration plant.

A private firm has been contracted for the task, deploying both heavy and small-scale machinery.

Additionally, the central filtration plant in Sangjani will also undergo cleaning during the process.
