John Mulaney mocks Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix struggles in front of A-listers

John Mulaney jokes about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix struggles in front of A-listers like Ben Affleck.

John Mulaney recently took aim at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix projects during a promotional event for his upcoming live talk show, Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney. At the Next on Netflix event in Los Angeles, Mulaney joked about the royal couple’s multi-million dollar deal with Netflix, quipping, "Not since Harry and Meghan has Netflix given more money to someone without a specific plan." His remark referenced the couple's high-profile deal with the platform, which has been criticized for lacking a clear direction and producing limited successful content.

Mulaney's comment highlights the mounting pressure on the Sussexes, whose Netflix ventures have yet to deliver major hits. Their 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan offered an intimate look at their lives, but their animated series Pearl was cancelled before it could be completed. Most recently, their 2024 docuseries Polo failed to resonate with audiences, adding to the growing scrutiny of their Netflix deal. Mulaney's joke pointed to the fact that despite the hefty financial backing, the couple's projects have not lived up to expectations.

As they face increasing pressure to produce a successful series, Meghan Markle is preparing to launch her own Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, on March 4. The series will cover lifestyle topics, including gardening, cooking, and hosting, while also promoting her American Riviera Orchard brand. Originally scheduled to debut on January 15, the premiere was postponed due to the devastating wildfires in her hometown of Los Angeles.

Mulaney’s remarks, made in front of A-list guests like Ben Affleck, further fuel the ongoing discussion about the Sussexes’ Netflix deal and their struggle to meet the high expectations set by their multi-million-dollar agreement.
