Paul Hughes slams Conor McGregor in heated online exchange
Conor McGregor’s feud with fellow Irish fighter Paul Hughes has only intensified since the latter's defeat to Umar Nurmagomedov.
Speaking with veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani on his podcast, Hughes mentioned that Conor's words no longer concern him.
Hughes said that he has turned his attention back to his career, adding that McGregor's words no longer hold any significance for him.
The war of words began after Hughes distanced himself from McGregor, igniting an intense social media barrage from the former UFC champion.
The rivalry began after the latter’s defeat to Usman Nurmagomedov at PFL Championship 1 in Dubai.
During a post-fight conversation with Khabib Nurmagomedov, Hughes made a remark saying, “I’m not like the other guy,” seemingly referring to McGregor, which sent shockwaves through the MMA world.
The remark reignited the infamous rivalry between Ireland and Dagestan, which has been fueled by McGregor's bitter feud with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
McGregor, who had initially praised Hughes for his performance, quickly turned against him, launching a series of venomous attacks on X (formerly Twitter).
McGregor was referencing that Hughes is from Derry, which carries a long and brutal history in Ireland’s battle for independence despite technically falling under the jurisdiction of Northern Ireland today.
Hughes maintained his respect for McGregor despite the ongoing conflict, acknowledging McGregor as an inspiration and the greatest to ever do it.
The rivalry between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland stems from a deep historical divide, primarily based on religious affiliation.
As the feud escalates, Khabib Nurmagomedov has weighed in, calling Hughes a “real Irishman,” further fueling McGregor’s ire.
In the midst of the drama, McGregor’s public persona continues to be marked by controversy, with his personal and professional life recently facing turmoil, including a recent lawsuit alleging sexual assault.
With McGregor continuing his verbal onslaught, it remains to be seen if this feud will evolve into a bigger rivalry, especially with many calling for Hughes to eventually sign for the UFC.
